Peer Mentoring Models for Transitioning Students with Disabilities

Peer Mentoring Webinar  ~~ June 5, 2020 1:00-2:00pm EDT

Peer Mentoring includes the development and use of peer mentoring networks for young people with disabilities to help them transition from secondary education to postsecondary education and employment through the power and influence of high expectations, self-determination and the development of self-advocacy skills.  Research has shown that mentors, especially peer mentors, can positively affect the movement of individuals with disabilities towards self-sufficiency through the establishment of high expectations, social supports and empowerment.

For the June meeting of the National Disability Mentoring Coalition, we will have three guests present on their peer mentoring work:

  • Steve Allen, President and CEO of PolicyWorks, Inc.  Steve will present the Workforce Innovation Technical Assistance Center’s (WINTAC) Peer Mentoring Pilot Projects including design elements and common features of the delivery models from State Vocational Rehab Agencies implementing peer mentoring services as part of their Pre-Employment Transition Service System. Steve will also share Peer MentoringWorks, an online certification and accessible learning center suite that is available to train and certify peer mentoring coordinators and mentors.
  • Sue Abel, Independence Works  Sue will present the challenges and opportunities of establishing a new peer mentoring service as a community rehab provider and share some of the impact of the service offered to students and youth with disabilities. Sue will also include a service marketing video produced with comments from peer mentors and mentees.
  • Peer Mentor: We will be joined by a peer mentor with experience participating in the Independence Works peer mentoring program and supporting mentees.

Please join this open session of the National Disability Mentoring Coalition to learn about the PolicyWorks Peer Mentoring Pilot Projects and Florida’s peer mentoring service provision by Independence Works.
